Turkish Title: Kardaki Hazineleri Original Title: Treasures of the Snow Author: Patricia St. John
Lucien and Annette live high in the beautiful Swiss Alps. When Annette gets Lucien into trouble at school, he decides to retaliate by threatening the most precious thing in the world to her: her little brother Dani. But tragedy strikes and Dani falls down a precipice and breaks his leg. Annette is so filled with rage she sets out to alienate and humiliate Lucien at every turn. Annette feels she can never forgive her neighbour Lucien for causing Dani’s accident. Annette goes out of her way to make sure everyone else hates Lucien, too. But then some surprising things start to happen to both of them. Impelled to escape, Lucien finds peace higher up the slopes, amongst the trees of the forest. There he meets an old woodcarver who encourages him, and he begins to have hope. But when rejection comes again, he discovers the hard way that a price has to be paid for forgiveness before there can be any reconciliation. As Lucien seeks to repent and restore, light floods both his and Annette’s hearts, and Jesus proves that He makes all things new.In the end, hatred and bitterness give way to forgiveness and friendship.
Turks love “Heidi”. Now, thanks to Haberci’s excellent translation they have a Heidi with a moral! The charm of this story is the lessons the children learn:
Although aimed at older children and younger teens, this book can be read aloud to children as young as 5. This story will also be attractive to adults and is an easy read. A reader on Amazon (US) gives the following recommendation: “When I was 9 years old I read this book. I didn't remember much about the story, but when I saw it in a book store all the warm feelings came flooding back, and I bought it to read to my daughters. They have so enjoyed it! Our oldest is 8, and our youngest is 5, and we've had a difficult time getting the 5-year-old to sit through "chapter books". But she was enthralled from the start, especially because of the cat and the kittens! It's a gentle story that depicts the love of Jesus in a simple way, without forcing it. It's just part of life, exactly as it's supposed to be. A beautiful story that I'm sure my daughters will carry with them, too!” |
