A Story of Friendship and Forgiveness

Turkish Title: Kardaki Hazineleri

Original Title: Treasures of the Snow

Author: Patricia St. John

ImageHigh in the Swiss Alps a little boy, Dani, disappears. Lucien, a lonely, frightened boy of 13, is overtaken by catastrophic events and he finds himself an outcast with his family, school friends, and especially the very hostile Annette from the neighboring farm.

Treasures of the Snow by popular British children’s author Patricia St. John is a best-seller that presents and deals with the issues of bitterness, hatred, and unforgiveness in a way that children and youth can understand and relate to.

Lucien and Annette live high in the beautiful Swiss Alps.  When Annette gets Lucien into trouble at school, he decides to retaliate by threatening the most precious thing in the world to her: her little brother Dani. But tragedy strikes and Dani falls down a precipice and breaks his leg.

Annette is so filled with rage she sets out to alienate and humiliate Lucien at every turn. Annette feels she can never forgive her neighbour Lucien for causing Dani’s accident. Annette goes out of her way to make sure everyone else hates Lucien, too. But then some surprising things start to happen to both of them.

Impelled to escape, Lucien finds peace higher up the slopes, amongst the trees of the forest.  There he meets an old woodcarver who encourages him, and he begins to have hope. But when rejection comes again, he discovers the hard way that a price has to be paid for forgiveness before there can be any reconciliation.

As Lucien seeks to repent and restore, light floods both his and Annette’s hearts, and Jesus proves that He makes all things new.In the end, hatred and bitterness give way to forgiveness and friendship.

This beautiful, exciting story has blessed generations of children and continues to do so. Along with The Tanglewoods' Secret (also available in Turkish from Haberci – Tanglewood Gizemi), Treasures of the Snow has been a continual bestseller since its first publication in the 1950s and it has been reprinted more than 20 times.

Turks love “Heidi”.  Now, thanks to Haberci’s excellent translation they have a Heidi with a moral! The charm of this story is the lessons the children learn:

Hatred brings bitterness and poisons our relationships

Annette is so filled with hate for her enemy Lucien that her life is poisoned and her relationships with everyone, including Jesus, are hurt.  She comes to understand that Jesus' love is enough for all problems.  Will Annette learn to forgive or will bitterness consume her?

Forgiveness is not easy, but it is essential

The two main characters struggle with the difficult task of forgiveness. A young girl must forgive the town bully for his misdeeds that resulted in her brother being crippled. The town bully must find a way to forgive himself.

Although aimed at older children and younger teens, this book can be read aloud to children as young as 5.  This story will also be attractive to adults and is an easy read.

A reader on Amazon (US) gives the following recommendation: “When I was 9 years old I read this book. I didn't remember much about the story, but when I saw it in a book store all the warm feelings came flooding back, and I bought it to read to my daughters. They have so enjoyed it! Our oldest is 8, and our youngest is 5, and we've had a difficult time getting the 5-year-old to sit through "chapter books". But she was enthralled from the start, especially because of the cat and the kittens! It's a gentle story that depicts the love of Jesus in a simple way, without forcing it. It's just part of life, exactly as it's supposed to be. A beautiful story that I'm sure my daughters will carry with them, too!”
